  Scarecrows and cornfields, the stuff that autumn is made of. There is something palpable about the flapping of a scarecrow's clothing in the wind, as if it's pumping its shirt with every breath, and squeaking and twisting to climb down from its sentinel post. The wind creates a constant crackling sound from the dried out cornstalks battering each other in the field. Corn rots on the cobs like morbid bulbuous teeth. Want to get into the mood? There's nothing like a fall festival to kickstart the greatest season! The corn crops and corn mazes - The pumpkin patches bring smiles - Sunflowers are abundant in the fall - Adults become big kids - Start researching now where there are farms in your area that have autumn festivals. I go with my co-author and best friend, Julie, every year to Schnepf Farms in Arizona. It's a ritual that renews my craving for autumn.

Ah, trick-or-treating in the 70s. What a magical time. Parents left us to run like vagabonds and gypsies through the neighborhoods brandishing pillowcases, and for the few good-doer nerds, Unicef boxes. Mass produced costumes were more common than the old-fashioned handmade stuff and everyone wanted the latest plastic mask. School had us wearing our costumes and parading the halls without any kind of "politically correct" protocol other than Women Women would be sent to the office for a sweater to wear over their provocative costume. I don’t know about ya’all, but my Halloween’s as a kid were totally wild and free orgies in which the children ruled the streets. We carried pillowcases `cause we were cocky son-of-a-bitches and we figured it was going to carry our enormous amount of loot. In my area we knocked on doors until midnight and covered miles and miles of the suburbs. Whoever reached the apartment buildings knew they had done a huge haul because they were on the periphe...

My tattoo has personal meaning to me. I wish I lived in autumn 24/7, 365 days a year. The season is the most magical, beautiful, colorful, comfortable, cozy, and sentimental. The tumbling changing oak leaf was important to me, to show that I am from a strong family tree, but I have drifted and tumbled and am always changing. I spirited myself from that steady base to have a journey. It also became my online name, Autumnforest. Autumn-themed tattoos can be seriously awesome.
