Believe: You're Capable of a Bit More....

When I think about mental, emotional and physical roadblocks, I am reminded of the weight loss TV shows where a physical trainer intimidates, pushes, cajoles and then orders the overweight person to do yet another mile on the treadmill. The contestant whines, cries, goes into full-blown hysterics and, before he knows it, he did the mile and ends up feeling euphoria of kicking butt and going past the exit sign.  Life is weird that way: We look back at the loss of loved ones, illness, anxiety, depression, financial hardships, relationship dramas and the like and yet we still say "I can't do this," when faced with a new obstacle.  But we are always capable of a bit more. ... There's a few ways we get through that threshold - Self-Bullying:   Sometimes, the way to get us through a tough spot is to bully. We might call ourselves a baby or a wimp or simply say "you don't rest until it's done!" or "buck it up!" Sometimes to get through something r

Lightning Phenomena

Catatumbo Lightning is a phenomena found in Venezuela mostly at the mouth of the Catatumbo River. This small region receives so many concentrated lightning strikes that it is considered the largest generator of tropospheric ozone. It can happen 160 nights a year, up to 9 hours of continuous lightning each night. It originates from a mass of storm clouds that create a voltaic arc at more than 5 km of height, during 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours per day and up to 280 times per hour. It occurs over and around Lake Maracaibo, typically over the bog area formed where the Catatumbo River flows into the lake (Wikipedia). Just when we think we know all about our natural world, there are so many huge mysteries to be found. Lightning has inspired fear and inventions, even horror movie creatures like Frankenstein. Ball lightning is an atmospheric electrical phenomenon. It travels like a burst of light that is anywhere from pea-sized to a few meters in width and usually associated with light

Back Road Scary Legends

Along the back roads of America, there are lots of odd, quirky spots. If you're planning a road trip based on creepy things, there's nothing better than unexplained legends. Hitchhiking  Ghosts Legends go back to the 1930s that Resurrection Cemetery in Chicago has a ghost hitchhiker nicknamed "Resurrection Mary." Supposedly this woman dressed in a party dress has been picked up by drivers and driven to the cemetery where she disappeared. It's believed she might be an occupant of the cemetery who died when going to a dance. Now and then, someone reports seeing her again. Spooklights   Hornet Spooklight between Missouri and Oklahoma is one of many well-known natural light phenomena like Marfa, Texas and Brown Mountain, North Carolina. Although no one is certain what these lights are, they seem to be something that remains in that location and reported for centuries, which makes it seem possibly land related, geology, or some phenomena that is of nature. 1950s SciFi Heroines: Women's Changing Roles

On the tail end of atomic knowledge and talk of future space travel following World War II, the 1950s ushered in a scientific era. Science Fiction movies were the rage and they churned out the formula fast and furious, trying to keep up with Cold War themes, fear of radiation, as well as women's changing roles after their work place contributions in the 1940s war time. "The Creature From the Black Lagoon" The classic 1954 Universal Studios movie, "The Creature From the Black Lagoon" gave us a heroine that set the standard for the formula; smart, usually brunette, normally the girl you want to marry, progressive yet still serving coffee, and often the daughter of or assistant to the real scientist.  "Kay Lawrence," the character from "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" played seamlessly by Julie Adams, was a breakthrough role. Her character was working beside her scientist/doctor boyfriend. She was allowed to support his research and her boss
