"The Fog" Ghost Ship Day!

Today is Ghost Ship Day being hosted by The Misadventures of HalloweeNut, one of my very favorite Halloween-lovers bloggers.

In honor of the 31st anniversary for "The Fog" (one of my all time favs), I'm going to tell you about the location for the movie.

I saw the movie when it came out (yes, I'm that old!) My first thought was "I want that job!" The character of Stevie Wayne the DJ in the lighthouse was a dream job, dream location! Every time they showed her walking to work, I'd think--is that real? Where is that?

Much of the movie was filmed throughout California's coastlines including the famous Bodega Bay ("The Birds") but the lighthouse was an actual lighthouse, Point Reyes. This wasn't a random site either. It is the windiest and foggiest place in America and can be found in the San Francisco Bay.

The star of the movie (the lighthouse) went up into operation in 1870. It utilized a different and very unusual light that could cut through the fog with its ability to refract the light rays and intensify them.

During the infamous 1906 earthquake the lighthouse and its peninsula moved 18 feet in one minute!

The lighthouse now offers tours. I tell you, just to walk that walkway and be photographed there would be about all I need!

Monsters in the Deepest Ocean!

The ocean takes up the majority of the surface on our world and yet so little of what is in it is known to us. Upon occasion, we come across some real mysteries, tantalizing glimpses that make us wonder. For a long time, the giant squid (above) was a legend until it was finally filmed underwater. What other legends might tell us what is in the sea? One creative thinker in 1570 drew up the sea monsters that lay in the waters outside of Iceland. Scientist and artist, Abraham Ortelius had some very fanciful ideas of what awaited the seafarer. He also pondered what might live in the Pacific Ocean. The 1970s and 1980s were horror movie lovers' heaven! Desert-Dwelling Bigfoot: Yucca Man

There are well known reports of Bigfoot wandering the American Northwest, the Sierras, the Rockies, the Mississippi River corridor and even Florida and the Northeast, but there are Bigfoot reported in deserts too. Ghost Ships and Fata Morgana Mirages

Fata Morgana Fata Morgana is a complex superior mirage. In this instance, in the horizon a narrow band seen can separate an image, casting what looks like another image superior to the original object. In the image above it appears as if the ship is in the air. Below, the image shows a repeat of it up in the air. Sometimes, the image can be inverted. This occurs when rays of light are bent when they pass through layers that are different temperatures. Flying Dutchman This legend is talked about among sailors since the late 1700s. The tale says that there was a ship's captain sailing around the most dangerous ocean strait, the Cape of Good Hope. He cursed the elements and swore he would make it no matter what. Monsters in the Sewers

There was a fantastic X-Files episode involving a sewer-dwelling monster. It was so creepy and distasteful that it almost fascinates the viewer to wonder, what the heck is down in our sewers? I grew up in the 70s when the talk of alligators in the sewers were rampant. The legend went, someone flushed a baby alligator down the toilet and it ended up occupying the sewers of New York City. There were a lot of variations of it, but one of those urban legends that leaves you checking out your toilet before you take a seat. In Florida, a man went out to get his male, heard something hissing at him, looked over at the sewer open and found an alligator sending him warning signals. This is the reporting by a Bigfoot researcher of an ongoing study in the Southern part of the United States in a very large park area near homes and urban setting.
