Adventure Sunday: Spontaneous Romantic Jaunts

Breathe life into your life--or your relationship and be spontaneous with a day trip.

KID-DIRECTED TRIP: Got kids? I suggest you let them pick a piece of paper from a hat: one says "pick the town" one says "pick the food" and one says "pick the picnic place." Pull up the map, let someone pick the town within 50 miles, when you get to the town, let one of them pick the place you pick up lunch. Then, drive around and let one of them pick the place to stop and picnic.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS: Pick a town within the day's drive and pull up the town's calendar of events online. See what's happening there on the weekend. Go there just for that event.

CARNIVALS: Go find the fun on the traveling midway site to find a traveling carnival in your state.

DRIVE-INS: Consider taking your loved one or family or friends to a drive-in theater. They might be in another town, but the trek will be worth it!

Zombie Walk: If you have some good friends who want something to remember, consider looking up zombie walks and plotting and planning for the next one in your area. Start shopping online for makeup and thinking about coming up with a hilarious costume to zombify, like a Victorian era zombie or a zombie cowboy.

Personally, my three most romantic and favorite dates ever--roadside carnival, drive-in theater and sitting out in the desert and looking for UFOs with music playing, cold beer in hand. Of course, making out in a cemetery might be high on the list too.

Monsters in the Deepest Ocean!

The ocean takes up the majority of the surface on our world and yet so little of what is in it is known to us. Upon occasion, we come across some real mysteries, tantalizing glimpses that make us wonder. For a long time, the giant squid (above) was a legend until it was finally filmed underwater. What other legends might tell us what is in the sea? One creative thinker in 1570 drew up the sea monsters that lay in the waters outside of Iceland. Scientist and artist, Abraham Ortelius had some very fanciful ideas of what awaited the seafarer. He also pondered what might live in the Pacific Ocean. In 1644, another artist/scientist drew up what he thought might lurk in the waters off of Africa. Willem Blaeu had quite an interesting vision. Desert-Dwelling Bigfoot: Yucca Man

There are well known reports of Bigfoot wandering the American Northwest, the Sierras, the Rockies, the Mississippi River corridor and even Florida and the Northeast, but there are Bigfoot reported in deserts too. Ghost Ships and Fata Morgana Mirages

Fata Morgana Fata Morgana is a complex superior mirage. In this instance, in the horizon a narrow band seen can separate an image, casting what looks like another image superior to the original object. In the image above it appears as if the ship is in the air. Below, the image shows a repeat of it up in the air. Sometimes, the image can be inverted. This occurs when rays of light are bent when they pass through layers that are different temperatures. Flying Dutchman This legend is talked about among sailors since the late 1700s. The tale says that there was a ship's captain sailing around the most dangerous ocean strait, the Cape of Good Hope. He cursed the elements and swore he would make it no matter what. Monsters in the Sewers

There was a fantastic X-Files episode involving a sewer-dwelling monster. It was so creepy and distasteful that it almost fascinates the viewer to wonder, what the heck is down in our sewers? I grew up in the 70s when the talk of alligators in the sewers were rampant. The legend went, someone flushed a baby alligator down the toilet and it ended up occupying the sewers of New York City. There were a lot of variations of it, but one of those urban legends that leaves you checking out your toilet before you take a seat. In Florida, a man went out to get his male, heard something hissing at him, looked over at the sewer open and found an alligator sending him warning signals. This is the reporting by a Bigfoot researcher of an ongoing study in the Southern part of the United States in a very large park area near homes and urban setting.
