Obscure Horror Movies Rock!

I went through a phase several years ago where I was obsessed with finding all the most obscure 70s horror I could find, especially British and made-for-tv horror. I wanted to find any title I hadn’t heard of to work on extending my collection. A lot of finds were total clinkers and buying them without seeing them was probably stupid, but enlightening. Some of the really awful ones became beloved movies.

Let me tell you something about horror movies, they’re a lot like food.

How is that?

We don’t look for the great food on every intersection corner at every big franchise restaurant like Burger King and Chili’s. We go off the beaten track and see where locals are going, perhaps try something new we didn’t know about before. It’s only one restaurant, not a franchise, but the food is made with mama’s recipes or by a fine chef. Yeah, it’s not fast and easily available, but it’s sure something we haven’t had before.

Well, movies are just like that. If we go to the big box office movies, we leave feeling hungry an hour later. They aren’t satisfying and us horror lovers will not be pleased with what is being shown in every theater. We need something a bit more garage-made, Indie or perhaps with limited release or even straight to DVD. That’s where we’ll find hungers appeased that we didn’t know we had.

I suggest you think about looking for that one weird and unknown addition to your collection, something that sounds intriguing. You can always pop the title into IMDB and see what kind of comments people have made about it and more details about where it was filmed and such. Start looking at some of these places I found:

Monsters in the Deepest Ocean!

The ocean takes up the majority of the surface on our world and yet so little of what is in it is known to us. Upon occasion, we come across some real mysteries, tantalizing glimpses that make us wonder. For a long time, the giant squid (above) was a legend until it was finally filmed underwater. What other legends might tell us what is in the sea? One creative thinker in 1570 drew up the sea monsters that lay in the waters outside of Iceland. The 1970s and 1980s were horror movie lovers' heaven! There were movies about nature turning on man because of pollution, witches, devil worshippers, killers, insanity, revenge, demons, families moving into haunted houses, beasts attacking, and teens being slashed. Desert-Dwelling Bigfoot: Yucca Man

There are well known reports of Bigfoot wandering the American Northwest, the Sierras, the Rockies, the Mississippi River corridor and even Florida and the Northeast, but there are Bigfoot reported in deserts too. Ghost Ships and Fata Morgana Mirages

Fata Morgana Fata Morgana is a complex superior mirage. In this instance, in the horizon a narrow band seen can separate an image, casting what looks like another image superior to the original object. In the image above it appears as if the ship is in the air. Below, the image shows a repeat of it up in the air. Sometimes, the image can be inverted. This occurs when rays of light are bent when they pass through layers that are different temperatures. Flying Dutchman This legend is talked about among sailors since the late 1700s. Monsters in the Sewers

There was a fantastic X-Files episode involving a sewer-dwelling monster. It was so creepy and distasteful that it almost fascinates the viewer to wonder, what the heck is down in our sewers? I grew up in the 70s when the talk of alligators in the sewers were rampant. The legend went, someone flushed a baby alligator down the toilet and it ended up occupying the sewers of New York City. There were a lot of variations of it, but one of those urban legends that leaves you checking out your toilet before you take a seat. In Florida, a man went out to get his male, heard something hissing at him, looked over at the sewer open and found an alligator sending him warning signals. This is the reporting by a Bigfoot researcher of an ongoing study in the Southern part of the United States in a very large park area near homes and urban setting.
